Review of Meet the Candidates’ Night by Sherman Mackereth Just thought you folks might like to know how the Meet the Candidates night went. This event was cosponsored by the Cedarville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Center for Political Studies at Cedarville University. It was a very smooth running event held at the Apple Technology Resource Center on Cedarville University's campus. All the things needed for this program were set up and in place well before the event; thanks to Cedarville University personnel and five of the Chamber members. The candidates started to arrive at 6:30 pm and were greeted by two Political Studies students and one of the Chamber Officers. Cedarville University Security saw that all were parked and Cedarville Police were on hand to see that everyone was safe. After the candidates were registered and briefed on the order of the program, they were able to fellowship with each other in a lounge just outside of the meeting room. Cookies and hot and cold drinks were provided by the Chamber for the enjoyment of the candidates and guests. Our wonderful cookies were baked by “Cakes by Carla.” The meeting started promptly at 7:00 pm with a welcome by Dr. Bill Brown, President of Cedarville University; introduction of the Facilitator, Mr. Doug Fleser, Deputy Group Director, B-1 Systems Group at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base by Mayor Jim Phipps; and introduction of the candidates by Mr. Doug Fleser. Approximately 30 candidates came into the meeting according to their respective office. Each candidate was given a minute to introduce themselves and then asked two questions, with a minute to respond to each. As time permitted, the candidates were given a chance to respond to one question submitted by the audience. The candidates are running for the following offices: Greene County Treasurer; Greene County Recorder; Greene County Commissioners; 2nd District Court Of Appeals; Representative to Congress, 7th District; State Representative, 84th District, and State Senator, 10th District. The meeting ended promptly at 9:00 pm with closing remarks by Mrs. Betty Baldwin, Vice President of the Chamber. After the event, the candidates and audience had the opportunity to meet each other and enjoy refreshments. There were about 130 people in attendance, including the candidates. Feedback from the candidates was that this was the largest group they had seen at any like event so far, and that it was very well run. The Chamber and Cedarville University’s Center for Political Studies would like to do another Meet the Candidates event in October in preparation for the November election. You may view a video of the Meet the Candidates’ event on the Chamber web site (www.cedarvillechamber.com), as well as find out more about each candidate.
